Gift of the Givers is the largest disaster response NGO of African origin on the African continent. Having been established on the instruction of a Sufi Sheik, Muhammed Saffer Effendi al Jerrahi (a spiritual teacher) in Istanbul, Turkey, on a Thursday evening, 6 August 1992, Gift of the Givers has delivered life saving aid in the form of Search and Rescue teams, medical personnel, medical equipment, medical supplies, medicines, vaccines, anti-malarial medication, high energy and protein supplements, food and water to millions of people in 43 countries, South Africa included. Commencing as a disaster response agency the organisation now has 21 categories of projects which include bursaries, agricultural self sustainability, water provision, counselling and life skills services, entrepreneurship and job creation, establishment of primary health care clinics and medical support to hospitals, winter warmth and supply of new clothing and shoes, sports development, feeding schemes and food parcel distribution, supply of household and personal hygiene packs, educational support and toy distribution, provision of housing, care of the physically and mentally challenged, orphans and the elderly as some of our diverse activities.

Innovating the world's first and only containerised mobile hospital comprising 28 units, innovating the world's first containerised primary health care unit, innovating the world's first groundnut-soya high energy and protein supplement in the use of severe Malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, TB, Cancer and other debilitating conditions, and establishing Africa's largest Open Source Computer Lab has earned us 132 individual and organisational accolades and awards including 4 Presidential awards. Thus far we have disbursed R2.1 billion in aid to needy individuals and communities in our 27 year history. Our motto is simple: "Best Among People are those who Benefit Mankind" and accordingly we serve ALL people irrespective of  race, religion, culture, colour, political affiliation or geographical location, unconditionally.

We actively seek to build bridges between people of different cultures and religions engendering goodwill, harmonious coexistence, tolerance and mutual respect in keeping with the divine injunction:

"O Mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Almighty is (he who is) the most righteous of you." (Sura Hujurat/the Inner Apartments, Chapter 49, Verse 13.)

"Well, you have kept the fast and learned what it means to go hungry. Now leave your fire unlit for a day and find out what it is like for those who have no heat in their homes! Go without shoes some day; tread barefoot in the snow and ice to find out how it is for those who always go barefoot through the mud and slush! Leave your windows open one day and see what it is like to live in a house without them! Go out in the street without your coat some cold winters day, just to see how it is for those who have no coats at all! As long as your stomach is full, you will know nothing about the condition of the starving; as long as your house is warm, you will not understand the actions of those who live without heat; as long as your own feet are well shod, as long as you have thick clothes to wear, you will have no idea of the state of those who go barefoot and unclad. Satisfy the hungry, so that Paradise may love you. Clothe the naked, so that you may not be bare on the coming day of Resurrection, when all the rest are naked. Become aware of the condition of all those paupers and orphans, for your own wife may become a pauper and your own children orphans. The wheel of fate turns. None of us knows what is to be : what great wealth may be doomed to extinction or how many, now despised, may rise to heights of dignity and honour."

The Logo

God Almighty Exists . The large "G" represents Him. He is the Originator, Protector and Sustainer of ALL Creation. He never sleeps. It is He Who humbles the mighty, and Who exalts the humble. He is without place, yet no place is devoid of Him. He is the Greatest Giver , Giving the Gift of life, sustenance, health, knowledge, intellect, wisdom and guidance. He is Absolute Mercy, Most Compassionate to ALL humanity, represented by the little "g". The symbol represents man in kneeling position with head bowed down and hands outstretched. Man is in need materially and spiritually. But God Almighty is closer to him than his own soul; it is man who is far from Him. He grants the supplication of every supplicant. He is Generous. He does not withhold His Gifts from the erring. He brings to birth, yet is not born. He gives to eat, yet does not eat. He has no need of anything, everything needs Him, yet when man takes one step towards Him, the Supreme Glory takes ten steps towards man; when man comes walking, He comes running and when man comes running, He comes flying. This is a Gracious God to Whom belong the Most Beautiful Attributes.

Gift of the Givers Foundation are facilitators of Almighty God's Aid (in a metaphorical sense), distributing it from Him to all of mankind. This is made possible only by His Grace and Permission. God's Aid is received by the Foundation through His representatives, namely, sublime human beings who are imbued with and reflect the Divine Attributes of Mercy, Kindness, Compassion, Care and Generosity in their behaviour and personality. These are the Donors, the Givers, the Life Blood of the organisation Giving the Gift of time, gentle words, material assistance, financial contributions and intellectual abilities. Their Generosity permits Gift of the Givers Foundation to serve mankind selflessly ensuring that the honour, dignity and respect of all recipients of assistance are strictly guarded without exception.

The Logo symbolises the "Hand" of Almighty God over the hand of man signifying Positivity and Hope. The Gift of the Givers Foundation and its Donors strive to be that symbol of Hope, God Willing.
