Search and Rescue Team Mobilised for Zimbabwe

At the request of the Zimbabwe Government, Gift of the Givers put together a team of 10 specialists to assist in the recovery of missing people following the devastating flood in the country. Four K9's with their handlers are the most important component of this team as we look for 39 children and their teachers, who presumably have passed on.

2 More Helicopters Sent In

Our boat teams could not find higher ground in various areas where they were rescuing people as water levels were rising. We need helicopter "guides" for this purpose. We couldn't deploy a bigger medical team to Beira to be flown to various "islands" to provide medical care because of a scarcity of helicopters in Beira.

The search to find the remains of loved one's was fully underway yesterday with total co-operation of the Zimbabwe Government. The pictures don't adequately represent the scale of destruction. Gift of the Givers team has marked out 16 potential search areas thus far. It is estimated that the victims could have been swept away by the raging water up to 60km away.

Gift of the Givers Base Camp

Base camp set up by Gift of the Givers road team at Estaquina, near Bizo. Gift of the Givers boat teams supported by local farmers in boats, collectively, have rescued 2100 people trapped in the water. Our ground rescue teams discovered 4500 people in the area where they moved the rescued victims to. There are now 6500 in this area that have had no material assistance nor medical care.
